Aaaaaah Yes! Morning Pages! I am back on the journey once again… stepped away from it but an inner voice has been speaking and telling me to revisit the practice. And so all I can do is listen to that voice and take action ๐
This morning’s morning pages ๐ I just LOVE how the light shines on the words as I write on my little desk in my meditation room!
What are Morning Pages???
Morning Pages is an exercise from Julia Cameron’s fabulous book The Artist’s Way. It is 3 pages of long hand stream of consciousness writing that is done first thing when you wake up in the morning. You write whatever comes into your mind without really thinking about it, just write, no pausing, just fill up an entire 3 pages of a notebook/journal.
Write without filters, be graphic, nasty, raw, honest, deep, insightful, ecstatic, loopy, crazy, neurotic.
There is no right or wrong to the process and isn’t meant to be perfect or presentable so don’t even judge what you write. And if you don’t know what to write then write “I don’t know what to write” over and over again until something else comes into your mind to write down.
The idea of doing morning pages is to basically take a “Mental S@#!” according to my friend Quincy! Hahaha! You purge everything and anything that is in your body mind spirit onto paper so that you create the space to receive creative energy. If you keep buying new clothes and never get rid of the old, you won’t have any room to hang your new beautiful clothes in your closet. In order to bring in the new, you must let go of the old and it’s the same with our minds and Spirit.
We take on so much everyday, mentally, physically and energetically and it’s necessary for us to take the time to clean our inner house. So it’s mental cleaning, mind shower, brain drain, thought purge. With this space we allow an opening for new ideas, inspirations, insights, answers and guidance to come into our spirit.
I learned about this process about 3 years ago and practiced it for nearly a year. It was one of the most amazing experiences I had incorporated into my daily routine. At first it was a bit of a challenge to move out your own way and sometimes I found myself not knowing what to write or pausing to think about how to say something but once you really open up to being one with your journal then some mind blowing things will come through from you. After about the 2nd week is when I saw how these morning pages started making a difference in my life.
My headspace was emptier, I definitely felt the itch to do some painting, doodling, sketching and just being creative. I received answers from spirit, formulated new ideas and was able to find solutions to various problems in my life.
There were less worries I was wrapping my head around throughout the day and could feel forward movement in my spirit.
After not having written consistently like that for months, I am now committed to the good life again ๐ I could already feel the elation in me after having done my first morning page...
welcome back me!
How to incorporate morning pages into your life:
- Buy yourself a notebook or journal, get fancy or plain jane whatever floats your boat.
- Pens are super important to me… I am so particular because it has to feel good writing
so find one that feels fabulous to your fingers.
- Wake up 20 minutes earlier (ooh I already hear the whining, trust me its worth it)
- Create a space in your home where you can write without distraction and make it comfy, light a candle, burn some incense, I wrap myself in a blanket and write… too bad I don’t have a snuggie it would probably make it easier!
- If you aren’t a morning person and just can’t absolutely find time with the rising sun, then perhaps if you ride a train to work then write on your commute, or take 15 minutes during your lunch break, but find time during the day to write. If you can find time for online social networking you can find time to clean your inner house ๐
Morning pages are called morning pages because it’s truly meant for the morning. That way you can clear the clutter first thing and have the rest of the day to play! Try it out and let me know how it goes for you ๐ Love and light!
